"Lupe" The Mammoth Officially Unveiled

Updated: Dec 5, 2018

Statue of Colombian Mammoth Is A Great Addition to the Guadalupe River Trail

San Jose Parks Foundation joined with the City of San Jose's department of Parks Recreation & Neighborhood Services and Office of Cultural Affairs to officially unveil the magnificent statue of "Lupe" along the Guadalupe River Trail. A brief ceremonial "unveiling" was held on Thursday, October 22.

"Lupe" commemorates the discovery of the remains of a Columbian Mammoth that was found along the river several years ago. The public was invited to celebrate this occasion, which will included brief remarks covering the historical, artistic and social significance of the discovery and, of course, there was cake.

Participants were encouraged to take creative "selfies" with "Lupe". We invite you to do the same and send them to our Facebook page.

The statue is located just north of Trimble Road at the trailhead.

San Jose Parks Foundation acknowledges that our parks & trails are located on the traditional and ancestral territory of the Muwekma Ohlone people, some of whom still inhabit this area. We thank the Muwekma Ohlone for their extraordinary stewardship of this land that we are able to enjoy today.
